Berlin 1942

When Bruno returns home from school one day, he discovers that his belongings are being packed in crates. His father has received a promotion and the family must move from their home to a new house far far away, where there is no one to play with and nothing to do. A tall fence running alongside stretches as far as the eye can see and cuts him off from the strange people he can see in the distance.

But Bruno longs to be an explorer and decides that there must be more to this desolate new place than meets the eye. While exploring his new environment, he meets another boy whose life and circumstances are very different to his own, and their meeting results in a friendship that has devastating consequences.

Review: How do I describe this book. Because I do not want to ruin the story, I will keep the review short.

This is a brilliant book and it was beautifully written. It follows the story of a nine year old boy named Bruno. Bruno's family moves from Berlin because of his fathers job. Next to their new house is fence and on the other side of the fence is a concentration camp. Bruno, being nine, does not understand that it is a concentration camp or that the people on the other side of the fence are Jews.

He tries to have an adventure while staying at his new home and he makes a friend on the other side of the fence.

I won't say much else about this book for fear of ruining it. It is a very sad story but it is also very much worth reading. It is a beautiful tragic story that I think everyone needs to experience.

  1. I totally agree with you on how it's a sad story. Have you watched the film adaptation? It's as heartbreaking as the book.
